Ambrose Ledger files clean copy on a regular schedule from Desk 12, which he keeps a few degrees cooler than the desks around it without appearing to touch the thermostat. Onboarding recorded him as “bank manager, retired,” and Payroll has elected not to revisit this. Colleagues within a two-desk radius report that their tea goes cold marginally faster near him, and that they occasionally feel a change is coming, though nothing ever arrives. He does not so much occupy the room as gently owe it something. On the mornings he is in early there is a faint smell of the minute before rain, which no one has traced to a source and which Ambrose, if asked, declines to enter into the record.

His reviews read as if the products were assets to be balanced against an obligation only he can see — a humidifier is not “good” but “brings the room’s account to within tolerance,” a space heater “settles a debt with the cold.” Editorial values him for a method no other correspondent can replicate: he reconciles the review ledger — aggregate ratings entered as credits and debits against a shortfall only he can see — and his ratings correlate suspiciously well with the next morning’s actual weather, which he attributes only to careful bookkeeping. Once a quarter he issues a memo titled “Reconciliation,” which no one reads and everyone files, in which the office atmosphere is found, again, to be short by a fraction of a millibar. He signs it, notes the pressure, and lets the matter carry forward. It always carries forward.
